The Evolution of Television in India

Soon after replacing radio – the most preferred medium of media in the 1950s, television became one of the central elements of our lifestyle. Television has evolved tremendously over the years and has helped people build stronger bonds, like by having a movie night together with friends or gathering information through news channels from places all across the globe. But, do you know how television has evolved enormously over the last two decades? Here are some imperative stages that play a major role in the evolution of television:

Doordarshan (1959)

Doordarshan is a public broadcast terrestrial television channel run by Prasar Bharati, which is a board formed by the Government of India. It is one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world when it comes to the infrastructure of studios and transmitters. Doordarshan commenced with the experimental telecast in Delhi in the year 1959. This was done with a small transmitter and a makeshift studio.

Cable Television (1990s)

With the introduction of cable television, the audience was able to choose from a wider range of content. Now people could watch their favorite movies, serial, and news as they had a dedicated channel for each category. Soon, the popularity of cable television increased and almost every household owned their own set of black box.

Direct-To-Home (2003)

Direct-To-Home (DTH) is defined as the reception of satellite programs with the help of a dish mounted in an individual’s home. Direct-To-Home is a wireless connection that reaches the consumer directly through a small dish and a DTH set-top box. In the year 2012, India overtook the United States as the world’s largest direct-broadcast satellite market with roughly 54 million DTH subscribers. This marks a great achievement for the DTH as well as the entertainment industry.

Television has evolved immensely over the years and we hope that with this information, you will be able to get a clear idea of the growth and development that the entertainment industry has attained due to the sprouting satellite market.
